Actimmune

Generic Name: Interferon Gamma 1B-injectable (in-ter-FEER-on gamma)
Brand Names: Actimmune

What is interferon gamma 1b used for?

This medication is a certain type of interferon used to reduce the frequency and severity of serious infections due to a genetic disorder called Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD). It is often used along with antibiotics to help prevent these serious infections. This medication is also used to slow down the progress of another genetic bone disease (malignant osteopetrosis).

How should I use interferon gamma 1b?

Before using, gently swirl the vial solution and check this product visually for particles or discoloration. If either is present, do not use the liquid. Do not shake the vial. Doing so may decrease the effectiveness of the drug. Learn how to prepare and inject the drug and review all instructions in the product package. If any of the information is unclear, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Inject this medication under the skin (SC) usually three times weekly (e.g., Monday, Wednesday, Friday); or as directed by your doctor. It is recommended to inject this drug under the skin of the upper arms (deltoid region) or thighs (anterior thigh region). Agrylin

Generic Name: anagrelide (an AH greh lide)
Brand Names: Agrylin

What is the most important information I should know about anagrelide?

- Your doctor will need to monitor your blood with blood tests before starting treatment with anagrelide, every 2 days for the first week of treatment, and at least weekly thereafter until the desired maintenance dosage is reached.

- Tell your doctor and dentist that you are taking this medication before undergoing any surgical procedures.

What is anagrelide?

- Anagrelide lowers the number of blood clotting cells (called platelets) in the body. This helps to prevent blood clots from forming.

- Anagrelide is used to treat essential thrombocytosis (too many blood clotting cells in the body).

- Anagrelide may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.



Alferon N

Generic Name: Interferon alfa (in-ter-FEER-on AL-fuh)
Brand Names: Alferon N

What is interferon alfa used for?

This medication is used in the treatment of leukemia, certain types of cancer and viral infections.

How should I use interferon alfa?

This medication is given by injection. Do not shake the medication container. Be sure to understand and follow the dosing schedule to receive maximum benefit from this medication. Different conditions require different dosing schedules. Drink plenty of fluids while using this medication. This medication may come with a Patient Information Leaflet. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. Properly store and discard used needles and syringes.



Alkeran

Brand Names: Alkeran, Alkeran I.V.

What is the most important information I should know about melphalan?

- Melphalan should only be administered under the supervision of a qualified healthcare provider experienced in the use of cancer chemotherapeutic agents.

- Serious side effects have been reported with the use of melphalan including: allergic reactions (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); decreased bone marrow function and blood problems (extreme fatigue; easy bruising or bleeding; black, bloody or tarry stools; fever or chills; or signs of infection such as fever; chills, or sore throat); lung problems; severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite; and others. Talk to your doctor about the possible side effects from treatment with melphalan.

- In some cases, second cancers have been reported to occur during and following treatment with melphalan. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of this medication.

- Melphalan is a cancer (antineoplastic) medication. Melphalan interferes with the growth of cancer cells and slows their growth and spread in the body.

- Melphalan is used to treat multiple myeloma (a type of blood cancer), cancer of the ovary, and breast cancer.

- Melphalan may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.



Ancobon (Cancer)


Generic Name: flucytosine (flew SIGH toe seen)

Brand Names: Ancobon

What is the most important information I should know about flucytosine?

- Take all of the flucytosine that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may begin to improve before the infection is completely treated.

- Flucytosine may cause nausea and vomiting. You can reduce this side effect by taking the capsules a few at a time over a 15-minute period.

What is flucytosine?

- Flucytosine is an antifungal medication. It is like an antibiotic but is used to treat fungal infections.

- Flucytosine is used to treat serious fungal infections of the blood, lungs, heart, central nervous system, and urinary tract.

- Flucytosine may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
